- General
- Club DNA: Consistently commit to actions that are in line with our core values, especially when it's hard and others are not following suit; you are the face of this organization!
- Self-Care: Commit to physical, mental, and emotional well-being every day instead of making it an afterthought; time on the golf course coupled with regular sleep, water intake, healthy diet, etc. is key; look into HeadSpace, Calm, and/or The Tapping Solution apps as simple time-efficient self-care options for every day use
- Intention vs Perception: Consider how the receiver (e.g. media, players) will receive your message when you craft it in your mind; be mindful of how and when you say things in order to achieve your desired outcome; communicate with purpose instead of letting negative emotions hijack your message
- Openness Breads Trust: Remember that being more vulnerable with players (tough season for everyone!) can create connection which will enhance buy-in and motivation; at times, show courage in sharing your own struggles so players will feel closer to you; it'll have a big impact on team performance
- Practice
- Set Expectations: At start of practice, huddle up and give a quick overview of what will be worked on and what your expectations are
- Debrief: At end of practice, huddle up and give a quick analysis of team's practice performance with a focus on strengths, struggles, and strategies (i.e. positives to carry over into next practice/game and what to improve)
- Empower: Show guys who help carry the culture (e.g. team captain(s)) that you have their back so that other guys will feel more inclined to follow their lead; seek their input before, during, or after practice from time to time
- Hold Accountable: Speak up when guys are going through the motions or not being respectful; decided on case by case basis who can handle what, but make it a point to directly address even guys like Holloway at times to send message to rest of team
- Game
- Reflect: Consistently remind yourself of who you are and what you do when at your best (regardless of roster and situation); beyond Xs and Os, you're known for your composure and leadership presence, so show it!
- Book Ends: Similar to setting expectations before practice and debriefing after, look at games the same way; address team before as you always do, and then spend 5 to 10 minutes in locker room with team after to address strengths, struggles, and strategies
- Connect: This goes for before, during, and after game; give extra positive touches, make eye contact, huddle guys up, encourage, hold accountable, and create human connection that goes beyond performance and outcome
- Preach Process: Consistently emphasize culture and growth; with this team, it'll rarely be smooth and pretty out there, but it's important to keep guys bought into the mission and preach a growth mindset in all regards (Xs and Os, body language, accountability, connection, etc.)
